Are you a bold and creative thinker and an aspiring changemaker who is passionate about applying science and technology to create a more equitable, creative, prosperous, and sustainable world?

 

Station1 is looking for you!


We invite you to apply to be in the inaugural cohort of Station1 Fellows who will participate in the Summer@Station1 program – a unique and exciting residential science and technology-focused educational, research, and internship program with a focus on societal perspective, social innovation and impact. Fellows will come from near and far to work together throughout the summer of 2018 in the Boston region of Massachusetts in the United States.

As a Station1 Fellow You Will:

  • Receive a competitive living expenses stipend, housing costs, a stipend for transportation to and from Station1, and instructional costs

  • Gain authentic, hands-on experience through an  internship in a leading science and technology startup, company, or research laboratory (4 days per week);
  • Participate in exciting, state-of-the-art, team-based research and development projects in science and technology applied to social impact;
  • Drive forward a project you are passionate about with potential to make a positive difference in the world;
  • Engage with a blended, shared curriculum that draws together critical perspectives on science, technology, society, inclusion, equity, and social innovation and gain interdisciplinary experience by interacting with guest instructors and mentors from a diversity of fields (1 day per week);
  • Have access to a creative co-working, collaboration, and learning space;
  • Gain professional and interpersonal information and experience in areas such as: critical thinking, collaboration, leadership, scientific and technical communication, and creativity;
  • Build long-lasting mentoring relationships with world experts in science and technology for networking, advice, and potential future letters of recommendation; 
  • Receive individualized information and guidance on academic and career pathways; and
  • Become part of a network of exceptional professionals in the Station1 community beyond completion of the program.

Be Inspired and Work on a Passion Project

Summer@Station1 will involve interdisciplinary, team-based science and technology projects with a civic focus - projects that apply science and technology to the public good and are fundamentally linked to humanistic concepts and societal concerns. Station1 will work closely with accepted applicants to match students to projects in their areas of interest. Example areas of focus for Station1 include:

Summer@Station1 students will be placed in paid internships in leading companies, start-ups, and research laboratories.  Summer@Station1 internships will give you the preparation you need to be highly competitive for employment in emerging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields, as well as for continuing on to graduate education, if you choose to pursue this career path.

 
 

Supportive and Caring Mentors

As a Station1 Fellow, you will receive more than an internship supervisor, you will gain a diverse team of exceptional and caring mentors. From the Station1 staff to the shared curriculum instructors to the project mentors, the Station1 team will provide academic, professional, and interpersonal information and experience and will foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment. As a Station1 student, you will receive much more than technical and academic guidance and learning. Mentors will get to know you personally and will serve as a resource for career advice, planning, and guidance.

     
     

    A Dynamic Gateway City Location in the Boston Region

    Summer@Station1 will be based out of Lawrence, Massachusetts, a dynamic “gateway city” with a rich industrial history and burgeoning creative ecosystem, with direct transportation to Boston and its surrounding cities. The spirit and community of Lawrence embody the values of Station1 - inventive, diverse, civic-minded, a place that brings together past, present, and future in productive and inspiring ways along the beautiful Merrimack River. Student housing and the shared curriculum will be provided in Lawrence.

     

    Station1 Fellows will have the opportunity to experience the Boston region which is known for its vibrant scientific and technology ecosystem of startups, larger corporations, and universities. Boston was recently ranked No. 1 among the top 25 startup hubs in the U.S., according to a report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, alone, there is more tech academic research and development spending (about $4 billion) than in any other part of the United States, including the San Francisco Bay Area ($1.3 billion).     Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must:

    • Be currently enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree-granting program at an accredited postsecondary institution and in good standing;

    • Have a genuine interest in science and technology applied to social impact; 

    • Be available for the entire duration of the Summer 2018 program (tentative dates: June 9th - August 15th). Academic or family obligations may be excused with advance notice. 

    African American, Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander, first-generation students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, students enrolled at minority-serving institutions, teaching institutions, and community colleges are strongly encouraged to apply.

    Station1 also strongly encourages students who have not had the opportunity to participate in a previous research, internship, or significant project-based experience to apply.
