Station 1 Laboratory Inc. (Station1) is a nonprofit academic institution pioneering a new model of research and development—socially-directed science and technology. This framework aims to interrogate, understand, accelerate, and shape the cascading impacts of science and technology to achieve beneficial outcomes for humanity and the planet. Station1 undertakes projects focused on the social and environmental impacts of emerging technologies, historically-informed approaches to technological development, and socially-directed pedagogy and curriculum. Its areas of emphasis include computation and artificial intelligence, materials science, infrastructure, and energy.
